How to get the most out of your sexual health protection!

Sexual Health Advice

Not all protection will help protect against STIs. Even amongst those that do, no protection is 100% effective in protecting against the spread sexually transmitted diseases. However, there are steps we can take to make sure that our protection is as effective as possible in keeping us and our partners safe. In this blog we are going to outline some of these best practice methods.

1. Understand which methods of protection will help prevent the spread of STIs

Anyone who is sexually active is at risk of catching an STI. People often use the term contraceptive and protection synonymously when talking about safe sex. Although hormonal and other types of contraceptives can be effective in preventing an unwanted pregnancy, it is important to note that only barrier methods of protection aid in preventing the spread of an STI. These include condoms, diaphragms, and dental dams. Diaphragms are not as effective as condoms in preventing STI.

2. Store your protection correctly

Store your protection in a cool, dark place like a bedside drawer. Try to keep your condoms, diaphragm, or dental dam stored at a consistent temperature as excessive cold or heat can damage them making them less effective. This means storage places like a fridge, in direct sunlight, in a hot car, directly beside a radiator, or a wallet stored in your pocket are not ideal places to keep your protection.

3. Check expiry dates

A lot of people are unaware that their barrier methods of protection will have expiry dates. Manufacturer’s do not recommend use of their products after this date as they cannot guarantee the effectiveness of the product. Condoms, diaphragms, and dental dams will be more prone to breakage and tears after this time. It is also important to check your condoms, diaphragms, and dental dams for any breakages or tears prior to use.

4. Open & use them according to manufacturer’s guidelines

Condoms are 98% effective against STIs / STDs when used correctly. Always use the product according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure to put the condom on prior to engagement in any form of sexual activity (including casual touch and oral sex) as STIs can be spread through these methods too. Always tear the foil wrapper of a condom or dental dam using your hands and do not use teeth or any sharp objects to open packets as you risk damaging the item inside rendering it ineffective.

5. Have regular sexual health check ups

No method of protection, even when used correctly, is 100% effective against all STIs. The only sure way of knowing your sexual health status is with a test. Some STIs show no symptoms, and can lead to more serious medical complications if left untreated making early detection and treatment vital to your health and well being.
